Privacy Policy
Toolbelt for ChatGPT (“the extension”) is an independent browser extension that adds productivity tools to the ChatGPT website. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by OpenAI or Microsoft. This policy covers the extension in every browser extension store it is published in, including Microsoft Edge Add-ons, and describes, feature by feature, what data it accesses, why, where that data is kept and who receives it.
Summary
- The extension runs only on
chatgpt.comandchat.openai.com. - The developer operates no server for the extension and receives none of your data. The extension uses no analytics, advertising, tracking, AI services or remote code.
- To carry out a feature you use, the extension sends requests to OpenAI’s ChatGPT services (
chatgpt.comand ChatGPT’s image hosts) with the ChatGPT sign-in you already have. It sends nothing anywhere else. - Your preferences and an outline cache are stored locally in your browser.
- We do not sell user data, transfer it to third parties, use it for advertising or for purposes unrelated to the extension’s features, or use it to determine creditworthiness or for lending purposes.
Data at a glance
| What happens | Data |
|---|---|
| Read and processed on your device, not kept | Images and image addresses shown on the page; the text of your own messages and the headings of ChatGPT’s replies (outline); a reply you choose to smart-copy; the chat you export; sidebar chat titles and links (bulk actions); messages you queue (page memory only); your ChatGPT access token (page memory only). |
| Stored locally in your browser | Interface language, which tools are on, outline and export settings, quick-tour progress, and an outline cache of recent chats (details below). |
| Sent over the network | Requests to OpenAI’s ChatGPT services only: chatgpt.com / chat.openai.com, ChatGPT’s image hosts *.oaiusercontent.com and *.oaistatic.com, and, only if you allow it for smart copy, images.openai.com. Nothing is sent to the developer or to any other party. |
What each feature accesses and why
Image batch download
Reads the image elements, image addresses and image-group information shown on the page to display previews and a selection list. When you open the panel, it requests the current chat’s data from chatgpt.com to find the images in ChatGPT’s replies (file IDs and sizes). When you download, it asks chatgpt.com for a download address for each image you selected, fetches the image from ChatGPT’s servers and writes it to the folder you choose. The chat data is used only to list the images and is not kept. If these requests fail, only the images shown on the page are used.
Conversation outline
Reads the text of the messages you sent and, in headings mode, the headings of ChatGPT’s replies (heading text only, not the rest of the reply). ChatGPT loads only part of a long chat, so the extension reads the conversation data ChatGPT itself loads into the page and, for a chat with older turns, requests that chat’s full content from chatgpt.com; while older questions are being loaded it may also ask ChatGPT’s server for larger pages of the same chat. If the request fails, the extension scrolls the chat so that ChatGPT loads the rest (scrolling yourself stops this). Outline titles are made on your device.
Smart copy
Only when you click its button next to a reply, reads that reply as shown on the page (text, tables, code and the look of its interactive parts), draws the interactive parts as pictures on your device and writes the result to your clipboard. Photos inside those parts that are hosted on images.openai.com are fetched once so they can be drawn. Reading that host needs a permission your browser asks you for when you switch smart copy on; without it smart copy stays off, and switching smart copy off gives the permission back. The copied content is not stored by the extension.
Chat export
Only when you open the export panel, requests the current chat from chatgpt.com (your questions, the text of ChatGPT’s replies and the IDs of their images) so you can choose what to export. When you export, it fetches the original images of the questions you selected. A Word file is created on your device and downloaded by your browser; a PDF is handed to your browser’s print dialog for you to save. The chat’s content is used only for that export and is not stored.
Bulk chat actions
Reads the chat titles and links in the ChatGPT sidebar so you can tick them, then, after you confirm, clicks ChatGPT’s own Archive or Delete for each chat you chose. It does not use your access token or call ChatGPT’s API.
Message queue
Keeps messages you queue with Ctrl+Enter while ChatGPT is answering in the page’s memory, then puts each into ChatGPT’s message box and sends it to ChatGPT once the answer has finished. Queued text is never written to storage and is discarded when the page is closed or reloaded.
Your ChatGPT sign-in
To request a chat’s data or an image’s download address, the extension obtains an access token from ChatGPT’s own session endpoint (chatgpt.com/api/auth/session), the same way ChatGPT’s web page does. The token is kept only in the memory of the open ChatGPT page, is never written to storage and is sent only to chatgpt.com. Image requests may carry your ChatGPT login cookies under the browser’s normal rules. The extension never sees or stores your password.
Data stored in your browser
The extension uses the browser’s extension storage, which stays on your device and is not synced. It stores:
- your interface language and which tools are switched on;
- outline settings: whether it lists questions or headings, which side it is docked on, whether it is collapsed, its size and its button position;
- export settings: the format last chosen and whether to include images;
- which quick-tour slides you have seen, and a short-lived request to open the tour;
- an outline cache for the 50 most recently opened chats: each question’s ID, its first 100 characters and its time, and the headings of the replies, so that a reopened chat shows its outline at once.
Nothing stored is uploaded or analyzed. Images you save stay in the folder you chose and are managed by you.
Sharing and transfer
The extension sends requests only to OpenAI’s ChatGPT services listed above, and only to perform the feature you are using. These are services you already use; OpenAI’s own privacy policy applies to them. The extension does not send your data to the developer or to any other party. We do not sell, rent, license or broker user data, and we do not share it with service providers, advertisers or data brokers. The extension’s use of data complies with the user data policies of the stores it is published in, including their limited-use requirements: data is used only to provide the features described here.
The extension’s toolbar popup offers an optional Ko-fi link and a feedback email address. They open only when you click them, and the extension sends no data with them. The Alipay and WeChat codes in the popup are images bundled with the extension. The extension does not read or process payment information.
Your choices and how to delete data
- Switch any tool off in the extension’s toolbar popup; it stops at once on open ChatGPT tabs.
- Switching the conversation outline off deletes the outline cache.
- Switching smart copy off removes the
images.openai.compermission. - Removing the extension from your browser’s extensions page (in Microsoft Edge:
edge://extensions→ Remove) deletes everything it stored in your browser. - Because the developer receives no data, there is no copy held elsewhere to access, correct or delete.
Security
All requests use HTTPS. The access token stays in the page’s memory and is never stored or sent to anyone other than chatgpt.com.
Children
The extension is not directed at children under 13 and does not knowingly collect their information.
Changes to this policy
We update this page when a feature changes how data is handled, and change the effective date above.
